The anniversary letter
Structure: one year in three scenes. Choose three moments from the past twelve months — one funny, one hard, one quiet — and write a short paragraph on each. Finish with one sentence about the year ahead.
Opening line to borrow: "Three things happened this year that I want to make sure you remember the way I do."
The birthday letter
Structure: a portrait, not a wish list. Describe who they have become, with evidence. What have they got braver about? What do other people rely on them for? Birthdays are the one day it is acceptable to tell someone plainly what they are like.
Opening line to borrow: "I want to tell you what you looked like to me this year."
The apology letter
Structure: name it, own it, change it, stop. Say exactly what you did without softening verbs. Say what it cost them — that is the part that proves you understand. Say what will be different, concretely. Then stop; do not ask for forgiveness in the same letter, because that turns the apology into a request.
Opening line to borrow: "I've thought about Thursday every day since, and I want to say it properly rather than quickly."
The just-because letter
Structure: one observation, one memory, one plain sentence. Two hundred words is plenty. The whole power is in the absence of an occasion — nothing prompted it, which means the feeling did.
Opening line to borrow: "No reason for this one."
The goodbye letter
Structure: gratitude, honesty, release. Say what you are glad about first, so the honesty that follows is not read as revision of history. Be truthful about why. End by wishing them something specific rather than something general.
Never send this one the same night you write it. Read it once as if you were them.
The letter to someone who is gone
Some letters have no recipient, and are still worth writing. Address it anyway, use the present tense, and tell them what has happened since. Grief letters do not need endings. Stop wherever you run out.
Write one yourself
Letters From The Sea is a quiet place to type a letter on an old typewriter by the shore and send it to one person through a private link that washes away after 24 hours.
